Microsoft Word™ conversion to HL7 in the UK

MDI Solutions recently completed another Discharge Letter to GP distribution process; on this occasion for Warrington & Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The conversion technique developed by MDI takes data from the sites Meditech Patient Admin System and Medcor application which produces the discharge letters. MDI Solutions’ integration engine, MD Link, intercepts these letters and automatically converts the data to HL7 for distribution to individual GP Practices.
MD Link was utilized in the Discharge Letter processing to automate and improve workflow. The Word based discharge summaries are automatically converted to HTML and the document is then embedded in an HL7 message for transfer to Physician Office systems. Development and Implementation resources at MDI worked with Sunquest UK to design and develop a new ‘plug-in’ for MD Link that could automate this process for UK based Hospitals and Trusts, thereby offering an alternative to fax or mail out of the documents. MDI is currently working with a number of trusts on converting other documents and document types to HL7.

Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust manages two major hospitals – Warrington Hospital and Halton General Hospital. The majority of their emergency care and complex surgical care is based at Warrington Hospital whilst Halton General Hospital is a centre of excellence for routine surgery. The hospitals are part of the NHS North West strategic health authority area.
