Pharmacy integration model wins ‘Innovation of the Year’ award

Hogan Pharmacy’s (Sarnia, ON) use of MDI Solutions’ integration engine leads to peopleCare Communities winning ‘Innovation of the Year’ award for clinical pharmacy model in Canadian long-term care.

A first of its kind in the Canadian long-term care environment, peopleCare’s Clinical Pharmacy Model connects pharmacists directly with residents and staff, and leverages best-in-class software with automated dispensing cabinets.  The Hogan Pharmacy group was one of the key architects of the project, whereby they used MDI Solutions’ interface engine, MD Link, to complete the systems integration.  MDI assigned one of their local HL7 certified resources to work with the Hogan group to review the workflow and develop the required interfaces.  MD Link was used to convert the Kroll (pharmacy management software) XML file to HL7 for pharmacy orders and order updates.  The integration required monitoring the Kroll pharmacy system for order information and then converting and processing the data as HL7 to send to Omnicell (autonomous pharmacy service), where the patient drugs are then dispensed.  The entire project took a little over one month from planning and work flow analysis to ‘go-live’.

Hogan Pharmacy has been providing pharmacy services to Lambton County since 1951. The pharmacy was originally located in the St. Josephs Hospital and now resides adjacent to the newly constructed Bluewater Health Hospital.  Over the last 23 years the Hogan Pharmacy group has grown to a total of eight independently owned pharmacies with a focus on complete patient wellness.
