MDI Solutions wraps up successful HIMSS Conference

MDI Solutions made a significant impact at the recent HIMSS Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida with the launch of their OCR and Barcode interfacing capabilities.

MDI has enhanced their HL7-based integration engine software, MD Link, to include OCR and Barcode integration with hospital systems.   By adding these workflow-improving features to MD Link, MDI has provided hospitals and healthcare vendors with a means to incorporate data from paper-based forms and documents into their EHR’s.

MDI Solutions developed their OCR and Barcode functionality to assist with Perth Children’s Hospital’s (PCH) Ophthalmology workflow improvement project.  The Ophthalmology consultation notes at PCH are not stored electronically and it can take up to a week to retrieve the physical patient records to allow consultation review; as the records may be in use by other clinicians, tied up with another department or incomplete.

Using the OCR and Barcode ‘plug-in’ features of MD Link, the Perth Children’s integration team was able to capture the MRN and other pertinent data from the Ophthalmology order sheet and the consultation notes are now scanned directly into their Zeiss forum PACS. The clinicians can now review notes from prior visits directly from the PACS versus relying on physical records. This is further augmented using MD Link to query a patient directory (WebPAS, that holds patient records) and returning patient demographics against the MRN. MD Link can then apply this demographic data to make up the HL7 or DICOM message, which associates the scanned Ophthalmic Cover Sheet to a patient. The resulting data can now be stored in the Zeiss PACS, allowing it to serve as an archive for those patient records.

Thank you for dropping by the MDI booth at HIMSS and we look forward to seeing you next year in Orlando – MDI Booth 4746!
